You need a digital SLR camera and also special software to post process the images.
Many people don't realize that the human eye can see much more contrast than any commercially available camera.
An HDR photo is made up of three photos taken almost instantaneously, but with the camera automatically adjusting the exposure slightly for each photo.
With special software, the three photos are blended together and the end result (if done well) is a photo with extreme contrast.

Wake up intentional. The universe will notice. -Author Unknown
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

This photo has a very nice contrast. It would have been a good one to try making a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photo out of.
I don't know what that is. Do you need a special camera to do that?
